LEAD International Mental Health Conference

LEAD International Mental Health Conference

The LEAD International Mental Health Conference is one of our flagship programs, bringing together individuals passionate about mental health, including students, educators, policymakers, advocates, and people with lived experience. The conference creates a collaborative space for shared learning, open dialogue, and practical exchange of ideas, equipping participants with the knowledge and tools needed to return to their communities as informed and active mental health stakeholders.
Mental health remains widely misunderstood, with stigma continuing to prevent many individuals from seeking support. Through this conference, LEAD Community Foundation works to challenge harmful misconceptions, increase awareness, and promote inclusive, supportive environments where mental well-being is recognized, respected, and prioritized.

Vision

To strengthen mental health advocacy across African communities by equipping participants with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to become effective mental health champions in their schools, workplaces, and communities.

Who Participates

The conference brings together students and young people passionate about mental health, educators and school administrators seeking to foster supportive learning environments, policymakers and NGO workers advocating for mental health inclusion, individuals with lived experience sharing insights and perspectives, and community leaders and advocates ready to drive change.

Conference Goals

The conference provides evidence-based training and workshops on mental health literacy, facilitates collaborative discussions and knowledge exchange, empowers participants to return to their communities as mental health advocates, and works to reduce stigma while promoting supportive networks at the local level.

Conference Impact

Over the years, the conference has equipped hundreds of participants with practical tools and strategies to advocate for mental health, fostered partnerships between schools, organizations, and community stakeholders, and contributed to raising awareness, challenging stigma, and creating supportive environments across communities.

Why It Matters

Mental health challenges affect individuals, families, and entire communities, yet stigma and misinformation often prevent people from seeking help. The LEAD International Mental Health Conference matters because it transforms understanding into action. By equipping participants with knowledge, practical skills, and advocacy tools, the program ensures that every attendee becomes a catalyst for change, returning to their schools, workplaces, and communities ready to raise awareness, foster supportive environments, and dismantle harmful stereotypes around mental health.

Our Stakeholders

The success of the LEAD International Mental Health Conference is made possible by the active involvement of a wide range of stakeholders. Over the years, the conference has equipped hundreds of participants with practical tools and strategies to advocate for mental health. More than 100 participants have been certified in Mental Health First Aid, giving them the skills and confidence to support others in their schools, workplaces, and communities. These certified advocates return to their communities to implement initiatives, drive awareness campaigns, challenge stigma, and create lasting, positive change.

In addition to participants, the conference engages a diverse network of schools, lived experience, organizations, NGOs, policymakers, and community leaders, whose partnerships are crucial to fostering supportive environments for mental well-being. Together, these stakeholders contribute to raising awareness, reducing stigma, and building resilient, mentally healthy communities across Africa.
