LEAD BEAM and LEAD on Campus: Advancing Sustainable Mental Health Impact Among Young People
For the past eight years, LEAD Community Foundation has been committed to advancing mental health advocacy, education, and awareness, with a strong focus on young people and the communities where they learn, grow, and build their futures.
Through our work, we have seen firsthand the growing need for mental health education and support among young people, as well as the stigma, misconceptions, and barriers that can prevent them from seeking appropriate help.
These experiences have reinforced our belief that mental health education cannot be limited to occasional awareness campaigns. Sustainable impact requires intentional, structured, and continuous engagement within the environments where young people learn, develop, and transition into adulthood.
It is against this backdrop that LEAD is launching two complementary initiatives: LEAD BEAM and LEAD on Campus.
LEAD BEAM focuses on primary and secondary schools, creating structured spaces where students can develop mental health awareness, emotional literacy, healthy coping skills, and the confidence to seek appropriate support.
LEAD on Campus builds on this foundation within tertiary institutions, equipping students with mental health knowledge, peer-support skills, and opportunities to champion healthier conversations and practices within their campuses.

STRENGTHENING LEAD’S CAMPUS RESPONSE
The launch of LEAD on Campus is also a deliberate response to the growing mental health concerns affecting students in tertiary institutions, including reported cases of suicide among students over the past several years.
These reports have reinforced the urgency of strengthening the way we respond to mental health challenges on campuses. While awareness campaigns remain important, awareness alone is not enough.
Students need safe spaces to have conversations about their emotional wellbeing. They need access to reliable information, supportive peer networks, and clear pathways to appropriate professional help before challenges become more difficult to manage.

LEAD on Campus is part of LEAD’s response to this need
Through the establishment of campus mental health clubs and student-led structures, the initiative will create a more consistent presence for mental health education and advocacy within tertiary institutions. Students will be equipped to recognise signs that they or their peers may be struggling, respond with empathy, encourage appropriate help-seeking, and connect those who need additional support to the right resources.
The initiative is preventive, educational, and support-oriented. It does not replace professional mental health services or place the responsibility for managing serious mental health concerns on students. Instead, it seeks to strengthen the ecosystem around students by improving awareness, reducing stigma, encouraging early conversations, and creating stronger links to appropriate support.
In this way, LEAD is moving from responding to mental health concerns only when they become critical to building structures that promote earlier awareness and intervention.

TWO INITIATIVES, ONE CONNECTED VISION
LEAD BEAM and LEAD on Campus are not standalone initiatives operating in isolation. They are interconnected parts of one broader strategy for achieving sustainable mental health impact among young people.
LEAD BEAM starts the conversation early, helping children and adolescents develop the awareness, language, and healthy attitudes they need to understand and care for their mental wellbeing.
LEAD on Campus continues and deepens that conversation as young people transition into tertiary education, encounter new responsibilities and challenges, and take greater ownership of their wellbeing and that of their peers.
This connection is central to LEAD’s approach. We do not want mental health education to be something a young person encounters once and then leaves behind. We want to create a continuum of learning, awareness, peer engagement, and appropriate help-seeking that grows with them.
By connecting both initiatives across different stages of young people’s educational journeys, LEAD is creating a stronger foundation for lasting change, moving from early mental health education in schools to strengthened mental health advocacy and support structures on campuses.
THE IMPACT WE WANT TO CREATE
The impact of these initiatives goes beyond the number of schools or campuses reached. We want to contribute to a lasting shift in how young people understand, discuss, and respond to mental health.
Through LEAD BEAM, we aim to introduce mental health literacy early, helping young people develop the language and understanding to recognise their emotions, navigate challenges, challenge stigma, and seek appropriate support.
Through LEAD on Campus, we aim to strengthen this foundation by empowering students to become active participants in creating healthier campus communities. By equipping students with knowledge, peer-support skills, and leadership opportunities, we can encourage earlier conversations, stronger connections, and greater awareness of available support.
Together, both initiatives contribute to prevention, early awareness, peer engagement, appropriate help-seeking, and stronger school and campus communities.
Together, both initiatives contribute to prevention, early awareness, peer engagement, appropriate help-seeking, and stronger school and campus communities.

Ultimately, our ambition is to build a generation that is better informed, more emotionally aware, more compassionate, and more willing to seek appropriate support when faced with mental health challenges.
This is how we envision sustainable impact: not simply reaching young people once, but building systems, developing leaders, strengthening communities, and creating a culture of mental health awareness that grows with them.
JOIN US
We invite individuals, organisations, schools, institutions, corporate partners, foundations, and philanthropists to support this vision and help us reach more young people across Nigeria.
Your support will help us establish and strengthen mental health clubs, train student leaders and campus ambassadors, provide educational resources, organise awareness activities, and connect young people to appropriate support.
Together, we can move beyond one-off conversations and build a sustainable culture of mental health awareness and support, one school and campus at a time.
